WARM-UP

 

Read the following sentences:

 

  • Jared saw a man-eating crocodile at the zoo last Sunday.

  • Jared saw a man eating crocodile at the zoo last Sunday.

 

Is there any difference in meaning? Can you explain it?

Which sentence contains a compound adjective?

1. Watch the video and decide which statements are true and which are false.

 

  • A compound adjective is when you have two different words together with a semicolon. (False)

  • It is correct to say “I am open-mind”. (False)

  • If you’re an open-minded person, you’ll agree to eat a spider. (True)

  • The opposite of “open-minded” is “close-minded”. (False)

  • When a person is absent-minded, it means that his brain has been physically removed. (False)

2. Give the definitions to the words from the video.

2. Compound adjectives race. In pairs, try to answer all the questions in three minutes using compound adjectives.

 

  • What do we call a place where smoking is not permitted?

  • What do we call an action which is done or occurring at the latest possible time before an event?

  • What do we call a person behaving in a very cruel way with no sympathy for other people?

  • What do we call a meal which contains no fat?

  • What do we call a meal having a very good appearance or smell that makes you want to eat?

  • What do we call something which makes you think a lot about it?

  • What do we call a person behaving in a way that is accepted as correct?

  • What do we call something which is not modern?

  • What do we call something which is better, bigger, longer, etc. than anything else before?

  • What do we call a person who likes other people a lot and always wants to help them?

 

3. Put the hyphen where necessary.

 

1) Wendy prefers to walk on the brightly lit streets.

I usually work in a room which is brightly lit.

 

2) The last Christopher Nolan’s movie was really thought provoking.

This thought provoking article impressed me a lot.

 

3) Richard spent 2 hours in slow moving traffic.

The traffic was so slow moving yesterday morning!
